How has your career shaped you as a CFO?
My early years in auditing and insurance finance instilled in me a strong commitment to internal controls, financial discipline and regulatory accountability. These fundamentals remain critical regardless of how markets or technologies evolve. At the same time, the current business environment also demands timely, well-judged decisions amid uncertainty. I believe effective CFO leadership is about understanding both the numbers and the underlying business logic behind them, while ensuring growth is pursued within a robust governance and risk management framework.
How has your CPA qualification helped you navigate Yunfeng’s dual focus on traditional insurance and innovative financial services?
My CPA training has provided a strong analytical and governance framework that continues to guide my approach to both traditional financial services and emerging digital initiatives. At YF Life, which manages more than HK$100 billion of client assets, financial discipline and risk management remain fundamental. That same financial mindset is equally important when evaluating new technologies and innovative financial infrastructure, as the group explores opportunities in digital assets and blockchain-related initiatives. The ability to translate innovation into disciplined institutional execution is becoming increasingly valuable in today’s market environment.
Yunfeng has made notable moves into Web3, including investments in Ethereum (ETH) as a strategic reserve asset. What prompted this?
Our overall approach is to develop Web3 capabilities selectively and responsibly, combining licensed platform development, product innovation, real-world asset (RWA) tokenization exploration and digital infrastructure investment with proper governance, risk management and regulatory alignment. A recent example is the launch of our first RWA gold product, which reflects our effort to connect real-world assets with digital financial infrastructure in a compliant manner. ETH serves as a measured and limited strategic allocation that supports our long-term exploration of blockchain infrastructure and future tokenization use cases. The allocation is not intended for short-term market speculation.
How do you see Web3 and blockchain transforming financial services?
In insurance, digital infrastructure may gradually enhance customer onboarding, policy administration and compliance processes. In asset management, tokenization technology could improve distribution efficiency and broaden access to certain real-world assets over time within appropriate regulatory frameworks. However, we believe the long-term development of Web3 within financial services will ultimately depend on regulatory maturity, institutional governance and the ability to integrate new technologies responsibly into existing financial systems.
What new mindsets or skills are essential for CFOs today?
The role has evolved far beyond traditional financial reporting and control functions. But I believe the core qualities of finance leadership remain unchanged: integrity, professional discipline, independent judgement, and long-term thinking. Technology can enhance decision-making, but sound governance and responsible leadership remain the foundation of sustainable business growth.
